Why the MACAW Local Is Called the Local

THE MACAW LOCAL is the MACAW in black suede. It is named to point out that this shoe has improved on our efforts to localize production to the DR. Every part of the shoe, apart from the midsole and insole, is sourced in the Dominican Republic, and the upper, the outsole and the assembly all come from one city, Santiago.

The upper is full grain black suede from Bojos, a Gold-rated tannery in Santiago.

Our earlier outsoles were sourced from China. The Local uses the SUBTXT Regrind outsole, which is our own outsole, made in Santiago with up to 25% recycled rubber. It has a wave tread that grips and still flexes with your foot.

The shoe is assembled by hand at DMG in Santiago, a short drive from where the outsole is made.

The midsole and insole are the parts that are imported. They are Blumaka foam, up to 85% recycled performance foam made from post-industrial running shoe waste. They are imported because the footwear waste they are made from is mostly in Asia.

The Local is the first MACAW with an outsole made in the same city where the shoe is assembled. It is available now in sizes 6 to 14.
